Vision inspection is the most versatile non-destructive test method that is most frequently used in inspections of exposed or accessible surfaces of bodies, assemblies or finished products, to determine the general integrity status of a part or component and for detection of foreign objects inside equipment that may affect its function. It is also used in the mean inspection of structures and equipment with the use of raw human senses like smell, touch, hearing and vision.

In this activity, the human eye is used as the main instrument, which is complemented with magnification, illumination and measurement instruments, such as vibroscopes, borescopes, magnifiers and mirrors. The inspector’s experience and the knowledge he has regarding the operation, the materials, and other influential aspects in the mechanisms and objects that may have failures are necessary to obtain reliable results.

The hydrocarbon, petrochemical, energy, transportation and infrastructure industry, where there are corrosive environments, different temperatures or where there is pressure contained, is where these visual checks are most required. With a vision inspection, materials that do not meet specifications are identified, defect correction is facilitated during the manufacturing process, and the need for subsequent non-destructive tests is reduced.

The inspection by this method is applied in the quality controls of products, both in manufacturing and in service, for example in welding the quality of the finish, shape and size is verified; in mechanics, all types of pipe supports in assembly and operation are reviewed; in services of equipment and components, they are observed from heat exchangers to screws; in the service of pumps, valves, pipes and structures, leaks, corrosion, erosion and degradation are detected.
