6 things to tick off your list before proposing to your partner

So, you want to propose? Firstly, congratulations! This is a really exciting step in your relationship, but it’s still a big step and is something you shouldn’t just jump straight into. Before you pop down the road and by the first ring you see, there are a few things you need to do first.

Why? Because this is something you’ll only do once (hopefully), so you need to make sure you do it right. Notice how we didn’t say perfect? This is because there is a difference between the right way to propose and the perfect way to propose – the former is achievable, the latter, impossible. That should hopefully take some of the pressure off.

So, before you pop down on one knee, here are the 6 things you need to do before proposing to your partner!

1. Check-in with yourself

Take a moment to think about what you actually want. Do you actually want to get married, or do you feel like you have to? If you want to get married why? What does marriage mean to you and what do you want it to look like? It’s important to understand this first before going further so you can propose for the right reasons and with the right intentions.

2. Check-in with your partner

Once you’ve had some self-reflection, it’s now time to ask these same questions of your partner. It can be daunting, but it’s important to understand what your partner wants too. Try to be subtle, don’t bring it up out of the blue and try not to give your intentions away if you can.

3. Speak to their family

Once you’ve got the green light to go ahead with your partner, it’s now time to speak to their family. We aren’t saying that you need to ask permission – this is very outdated. However, simply making them aware of your intentions shows a great deal of respect for your future in-laws and will be well received.

4. Buy the Ring

Now it’s time to buy the ring. The biggest mistake you can make is simply trying to buy the most expensive ring you can afford. What you should aim for is the kind of ring that your partner will love. Speak to your partner’s friends and family if you need guidance, or why not enlist the expertise of wedding rings, Dublin?

5. Plan the Proposal

Next comes the plan. Think about your partner and how they would most like to be proposed to. Ignore what you’ve seen on social and on TV unless your partner has suggested that’s something may like. The best advice we can give is to make it as personal as possible. That way it will always be special – no matter how you propose.

6. Draft a Plan B

No matter how perfectly we plan things, there is always a chance for things to go wrong. Just in case, have a plan B up your sleeve should you need it.
