ABOUT THE AUTHOR

We will be leaving early tomorrow morning for a sport we have grown to love, snowshoe disc golf.  Never heard of it?  It is a derivation of the summer sport disc golf.  Snowshoeing is the twist that hooks us into going as often as possible to snow play the game.

The course we traverse is in Sugar Camp.  The course has 18 holes.   Snowshoeing the 2 miles plus or minus a few yards around the course is a great workout.  The discs we use are engineered for the sport.  The discs are not Frisbees.  One looks at the plethora of disc choices for distance, engineered to fade left or right, and weighing in grams from 150 to 185. All three of the three described characteristics are taken into account when deciding on purchasing discs.  A good choice is to purchase a beginner set usually consisting of 3 discs:  long and mid-range drivers and a putter.

After playing you’ll become more choosy looking specifically for discs with names like Beast, Eagle, Valkyrie, Cyclone, Stalker and Boss to name a few.  Then there is night playing with discs with LED lights.  What fun on a warm evening.  The lighted discs are no match for the snow in daylight play.  We have yet to try them out for snow night time play.

Most baskets have a par of 3 and there a few 4-pars on every course.  The distance from tee pad to the basket can range from 150 to 300 feet.  Most holes bear the name of someone who has aced the hole with the celebratory date.  Truly an awesome feat.

The DGA is the professional Disc Golf Association and there are sanctioned tournaments here and worldwide.  If you know someone looking for a different kind of job, a suggestion would be designing disc golf courses all over the world.  Yes, there is such an occupation.

My favorite disc of color for play in all four seasons is white.  It has improved my tracking ability.  It has given me many hours of playing enjoyment and a considerable number of pars and birdies in all kinds of weather.   A great way to beat the winter weather and keep fit.

Other courses in the area are Vets Memorial Park in Langlade County.  The first two holes are along the shores of Jack Lake and the rest in the wooded area in the park, Three Lakes at the high school, and in Minocqua.

Play with Ribbons on discs
Beautiful article! I noticed that you didn't have any ribbons on your discs. One tip that makes it easier to find the discs that are under the snow. Ribbons. Otherwise discs are impossible to find.
