About Us

NewsoftheNorth.Net, Inc. is an independent online news site dedicated to covering issues that are important to Oneida County and the greater Northwoods of Wisconsin.

Our goal is to provide a service to the community by increasing the knowledge and understanding of issues important to the residents of the Northwoods. We will accomplish this by delivering nonpartisan, reliable and indepth reporting on the local government, economy, schools and environment. We will encourage a variety of community voices and viewpoints to participate in the form of columns, blogs and letters to the editor.

NewsoftheNorth.Net, Inc. is a non-profit corporation with a board of directors. The corporation has 501(c)3 status with the Internal Revenue Service.

Mission Statement

NewsoftheNorth.Net will strive to deliver accurate, timely news vital for better understanding and participating in the communities and governments in Rhinelander and surrounding areas.

NewsoftheNorth.Net will strive to inspire excellence in the community by providing the highest level of reporting and writing, while maintaining good taste, respectfulness and impartiality.

NewsoftheNorth.Net will include a mosaic of Northwoods voices as columnists, reporters and bloggers to represent the variety of concerns, interests and passions found among Northwoods citizens. It will encourage and inspire all contributors, through its example, to adhere to the highest standards of journalistic excellence.

A variety of viewpoints and opinions is encouraged. However, the viewpoints and opinions expressed by the contributors to this site do not necessarily reflect those of the NNN staff and board of directors.

Owner of a private nursery in northern Wisconsin for 17 years, Julie is a marketing specialist and Certified Leadership Trainer for Kiwanis International. She is a past president of Kiwanis; she also has volunteered for many years with the Kinship of the North program.

The image “http://newsofthenorth.net/Media/16/jpg/2008/6/petecody.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.    Pete Cody currently owns and operates a lawn care business.  Prior to this venture he was employed by the Wisconsin DNR and retired after 33 years of service.  Pete was a union activist for 32 years. He held various union leadership positions, including 5½ years as president of the Wisconsin State Employees Union.

http://newsofthenorth.net/Media/16/jpg/2008/6/larryfrasier.jpg    Larry Frasier is a graduate of UW-Madison, a third-generation Rhinelander resident and a downtown business owner for more than 30 years. He is one of the founders of Downtown Rhinelander, Inc. (DRI) and was instrumental in bringing the Main Street program to Rhinelander. Larry spent 10 years living in various places around the state, the country and the world–a valuable experience in that it helped him to realize that there is no place quite so special as historic Rhinelander in its Northwoods setting.

Dave currently serves on the YMCA and United Way boards and is a longtime active member and past president of the Rhinelander Kiwanis Club, and is renowned for his fundraising abilities for Nativity Catholic School and other community organizations.

http://newsofthenorth.net/Media/16/jpg/2008/6/christinehonig.jpg    Christine Honig is currently employed at the Rhinelander District Library in Rhinelander where she is the Adult Programming Coordinator.  She was a member of the School District of Rhinelander Board of Education, as well as the Rhinelander District Library Foundation before working at the library.

Her undergraduate degree in history is from Drake University and she holds a master's degree in history from Duke University. She is an active community volunteer, serving as a mentor in a YMCA program for middle school girls, a member and former board member of Kiwanis Club, and volunteers at the local public radio station and also has served on their board. Currently, she serves on two education-related boards, Rhinelander Environmental Stewardship Academy and Rhinelander Scholarship Foundation, and serves on the county courthouse centennial committee. She also is a hospice volunteer.

She spent her college years studying Journalism at UW-Madison and has a passion for reading and writing.  Kuczmarski works in the city attorney/administrator's office in Rhinelander.  She is a governing council member for the local charter elementary school and is chief elections inspector for her district. Other than her three children, husband, golden retriever and two cats, Kuczmarski is kept busy by promoting science and math education for girls, learning about different cultures and enjoying ethnic cuisine.

She retired to the Rhinelander area in June 2007 after having served as assistant superintendent for the Roseville area schools near Minneapolis. She presents college courses and seminars on the following topics: The Future of Community Education, Courage: The Backbone of Leadership, Leadership for the Future, Group Process, Legislation: Getting to the Table, Communication Conflict and Decision Making, and Administration of Community Education. She volunteers as the organization committee chairperson for Rhinelander's Main Street program, Downtown Rhinelander, Inc.

He performed community service among the Spanish-speaking population in the U.S. and Peru. He has done public county administration and private consulting. While he retired in 1996, he continues to volunteer at the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry, the Rhinelander District Library Foundation and the Institute for Learning in Retirement through Nicolet Area Technical College. He is the host of an afternoon Your Favorites music show on WXPR, the local public radio station.

http://newsofthenorth.net/Media/16/jpg/2008/6/jamiepavlow.jpg    Jamie Pavlow was born and raised in the Northwoods, graduated from Madison Area Technical College in Madison, and then moved back to the Rhinelander area. She owns and operates her own graphic design business, Tint Graphics, LLC, specializing in all areas of print design. Prior to starting her own company, she was a graphic designer for six years at Schiek and Widule, an advertising agency. She is a board member of the Nicolet Area Technical College graphic design advisory committee.

He attended college in Chicago and Champaign, Ill., where he received his doctorate in veterinary medicine. He moved to Rhinelander in 1978 and worked with Dr. David Boyd until 1994 when he went out on his own at The Animal Health Care Center-North. He is an avid fly fisherman and upland bird hunter and enjoys kayaking and traveling to new places. He plans to retire in the Rhinelander area and eventually work part-time and do local volunteer work.

His education: St. Norbert College, B.A.; UW-Madison, M.A.; UW Madison, J.D.  He moved to Rhinelander in 1977 and practiced law. Community involvement includes past president of the Tri-County Bar Association; past president of the Columbus Club; past cubmaster and pack committee chair of Cub Scout Pack 560; past scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 560; former member of the Rhinelander Catholic Central Board of Education; member of the Board of Directors of Rhinelander Area Food Pantry; member of the Board of Directors of Hodag Sports Club; and lector and eucharistic minister at St. Joseph Parish. Mike will be greatly missed; his wit, compassion and concern was a gift to NNN.

http://newsofthenorth.net/Media/2/jpg/2008/6/ruthsproull.jpg    Ruth Sproull, general manager, began her first career writing advertising for a Cincinnati, Ohio department store and several advertising agencies in Cincinnati and Milan, Italy, after graduating from Smith College with a degree in art history in 1976. She then went on to found two companies. She was a freelance reporter for a weekly newspaper in the Northwoods before collaborating with Sarah Juon to start NewsoftheNorth.Net. She volunteers her services as general manager and reporter for NewsoftheNorth.Net, Inc, in addition to serving on the NNN board of directors.

He has 30 years experience as a technology business writer for Electronic News, Personal Computing and PC Week. Since 1990, he has been employed by CMP Channel publications CRN and VARBusiness and for CMP Online as the industry editor. He has served as a volunteer board member for WXPR public radio, the Town of Newbold Plan Commission and currently is vice president of the Squash Lake Association, and is a member of Kiwanis Club.

She has been a Rhinelander resident since 1985 and was a prepared childbirth educator between 1986 and 1998. As a mother of three children she and her husband Rick have been active in community and school activities for many years. She helped with RHS Band parades and chaperoning trips from 2001 to 2007, served as an RHS parent advisory committee member and former co-chairperson, is a member of Shear Joy Country Spinners (as in spinning wool), and was a breastfeeding support volunteer through Saint Mary's Hospital for a couple of years while the program was running.

Staff:

Ruth Sproull, volunteer general manager of NewsoftheNorth.Net, has worn many entrepreneurial hats, including owning a bakery/café chain in Cincinnati and a landscaping and a housing rehabilitation business. She has worked in marketing for many years, and most recently, was instrumental in helping Downtown Rhinelander Inc. qualify for the Wisconsin Main Street program.

Sarah Juon, the editor of NewsoftheNorth.Net, has had a long association with the written word. Her career includes working for United Media newspaper syndication in New York, publishing fiction, reporting for the high-tech industry and most recently, serving as editor of a local community newspaper in Rhinelander.

Jackie Cody, development director of NewsoftheNorth.Net, is a Rhinelander native who has many passions, including advocating for a healthy Rhinelander community, as well as the larger common good in society, and sharing the joys of scrapping and stamping, traveling and other life-enhancing arts. She brings her creativity and organizational skills learned from teaching in the School District of Rhinelander for 34 years to her position for NewsoftheNorth.Net.
